Katherine L. Albiani Middle School teacher earns regional Educator of the Year award

Francene Trengrove, an English teacher at Katherine L. Albiani Middle School, has been selected as the California League of Middle Schools (CLMS) Region 3 Educator of the Year.

The CLMS Educator of the Year award, sponsored by Prentice Hall and Dairy Council of California, is given annually to 11 educators, representing regions throughout California, who exemplify educational efforts to implement elements of educational reform in middle school. Trengrove will now compete against 10 educators from throughout the state for the CLMS State Educator of the Year award.

Katherine L. Albiani Middle School selected as a “School to Watch” by CDE

Katherine L. Albiani Middle School has been selected as a “School to Watch” through the California Schools to WatchTM – Taking Center Stage program, sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE), National Forum to Accelerate Middle Grades Reform and California Middle Grades Alliance.

Albiani Middle School is the second middle school in Elk Grove Unified to receive the “School to Watch” designation. The achievement gap of students at Albiani has narrowed by more than 30 points on the state’s standardized tests since 2007.

In October 2011, Toby Johnson Middle School – a “School to Watch” for the past six years – also earned this recognition from CDE. The school will maintain its redesignation as a “School to Watch” through 2015.

Wilton man dies in single-vehicle crash

An 81 year old Wilton man died Friday on Green Road in Wilton. The accident occurred around 2:20pm according to the CHP. The man’s wife was driving the car and dozed off according to reports.

Both the man and his wife were transported to Kaiser South Medical Center where the husband was pronounced dead. The couple has lived in the Wilton area to over 50 years.

Wilton Fire Department needs volunteers for their CHILI COOK-OFF this Saturday , September 17th from 10:30-4:30 (free lunch included for volunteers :) . State Highway 99 Ramp Meters at Sheldon Road to be Activated

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced today the activation of new ramp meters at the Sheldon Road Overpass for northbound State Highway 99. This will help motorists from east and westbound
Sheldon Road merge safely with morning commuter traffic and relieve congestion.

Activation of these ramp meters will begin 6 a.m. Monday, August 1st. The California Highway Patrol will provide enforcement at this location. Metering days and hours are from Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Advanced signs have been posted at these on-ramp locations alerting the travelling public about the metering periods.

Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the work area and to “Slow for the Cone Zone”.

Fight shuts down carnival at Elk Grove Western Festival

What appears to be a fight between rival gangs shutdown Elk Grove Park last night. There were 2,000 – 3,000 people gathered at the park for a carnival when the fight broke out. No reports of injuries or arrest. Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department responded to incident.

The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) Virtual Academy will hold four Open House events for new parents and students to provide an overview of the district’s K-12 virtual education program, meet staff and ask questions. Enrollment for students is now open for the 2011-2012 school year. Supplemental Tryouts for U17 – U19 Soccer

Due to high demand, the FC Elk Grove has agreed to host one additional supplemental tryout for the U17 – U19 Girls and Boys to take place tonight, April 13, at Bartholomew Sports Park, Field 4, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

No need to preregister. Simply check in at the registration desk and tell them that you are there for the supplement tryout.
