High school theater students from schools throughout Elk Grove Unified School District competed and earned a variety of awards at the 1st Annual Bob Smart Theatre Festival held January 14-16 at American River College.
The following students received awards at the festival:
Monologue
• Shelby Saumier (Cosumnes Oaks High School) won a gold medal for her monologue from “Romeo & Juliet.”
• Deborah Camille Robinson (Monterey Trail High School) won a gold medal for her monologue entitled “Fool For Love.”
• Zoe Espinoza (Pleasant Grove High School) won a bronze medal for her monologue entitled “Group Therapy.”
• Monique Sypkens (Franklin High School) won a medal for Most Improved Monologue.
Duo
• Connor Burton and Seth Coalwell (Sheldon High School) won a gold medal for their duo scene from “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
• Evan Forbes and Parker Barnes (Franklin High School) won a gold medal for their duo scene entitled “Time Out.”
• Nicole Porter and Amber Guidry (Franklin High School) won a silver medal for their duo scene entitled “The Blueberry Hill Accord.”
• Christian Stephens and Jenny Cox (Sheldon High School) won a bronze medal for their duo scene entitled “The Killing of Sister George.”
One-Act Plays
• The presentation of Thank You for Flushing My Head in the Toilet from Monterey Trail High School earned a bronze medal.
Gerard A. Larson Student Director Award
• Avery Walker (Monterey Trail High School) earned the bronze medal in this category for directing “Thank You for Flushing My Head in the Toilet.”
The Bob Smart Theatre Festival is an annual 3-day event where up to 60 west coast high schools assemble to perform plays, scenes, monologues, and songs. The Bob Smart Theatre Festival is a continuation of the long-standing, award winning Lenaea High School Theatre Festival, which ran for 53 years at California State University, Sacramento.
